How our canine allergy testing service works
At Mabel and Friends we use the Healthy Stuff testing kit, this means we will initially take a small sample of your dog’s hair or fur. From here, we will send it off to a specialist lab where they will test it for 374 different allergens and intolerances, including:
Once complete, we will be provided with a full report of any allergies or intolerances your pup may have. This will allow us to work with you and your pup to put in place solutions to avoid these allergies. It could mean you will need to change their diet or the product(s) they are washed and groomed with for example.
You don’t need to be a member to access this service, meaning it is open to anyone!
Is allergy testing for dogs worth it?
We think that using a dog allergy testing service can be very beneficial for your pup, especially because of the long term benefits they bring. They can provide you with that extra peace of mind knowing you have addressed any issues, as well as ensure your pup is living both a healthy and comfortable life.
Some signs your dog has allergies may include:
- Irritated or broken skin, usually indicated by your dog licking or scratching themselves frequently
- Areas of fur-loss on their body
- Rashes on areas like the ears, belly, feet and around the face
- Swelling, especially around the mouth and eyes
- Digestive issues as a result of allergies can lead to vomiting or diarrhoea
- Red, watery or itchy eyes

Frequently asked questions
Unsure about getting your dog allergy tested? Check out some FAQs below that might help you make a decision!
There are some allergies that are more common in pups than others, including:
- Flea allergy dermatitis (FAD): as the leading cause of allergic reactions, FAD is caused by the saliva injected into a dog’s skin by a flea when they feed.
- Environmental allergies: pollen and dust mites can cause allergic reactions.
- Food allergies: commonly caused by things like beef, dairy, chicken and wheat.
It is recommended that you wait until your dog is at least 1-year old before you allergy test them. This is due to the increased chance of both false negative and false positive results. As puppies are constantly growing and changing, it’s not uncommon for them to outgrow sensitivities during their early years.
